The Conestoga Steak House

This "no-frills" steakhouse on US. 231 a couple of miles north of Dothan, Alabama, will not please the denizens of Christ Cella's and The Palm, but for those of us who simply like a good grilled steak no matter where we have to go to get it, the Conestoga will pass with flying colors. The service is good and the prices are reasonable. If you are passing by, by all means stop, and chow down!

Beach Road Chicken Dinners

Beach Road Chicken Dinners, on what my mother and father called "The Old Beach Road", has been around since the late 1930s. I have been going there since 1952, and, after 45 years of experience with this divine old fashioned family restaurant, I still say that there is no finer or truer fried chicken in the world. Also, the cole slaw is fabulous, the biscuits light, and the creamed peas, well, they are an institution in and of themselves.

And the price is right, believe me!

The Colonnade Restaurant

The Colonnade is one of the truly great family restaurants in the country. Family owned and operated, the Colonnade has a large, reasonably priced selection of old favorites. The classic American fare rarely disappoints, and their fried chicken is the only fried chicken that I know that is in the same league with the fried chicken served at Beach Road Chicken Dinners. The cream pies are also scrumptious.

Weldon:

Ralph's Barbecue

My cousins who live in Roanoke Rapids, the town adjacent to Weldon, a few miles south of the Virginia/North Carolina border, have been taking me to Ralph's for years, and I know of the no finer or more authentic barbecue restaurant. In addition to top-notch chopped and sliced barbecue (Remember: Barbecue is a noun; it is not a participle.), Ralph's, a family owned business that is a half century old, serves good Brunswick stew, fine hushpuppies, excellent slaw, and first rate fried chicken (although it's not quite as good as that at the Beach Road Chicken Dinners or the Colonnade). There also is an excellent buffet for those who do not wish to order à la carte. Ralph's also does a land office take-out business, and with good reasons. The prices are most reasonable, particularly by Yankee city slicker standards.
